Canopy Walkway in Nyungwe

The Canopy Walkway in Nyungwe National Park is one of the most exhilarating and unique experiences in Rwanda, offering a bird’s-eye view of one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. Suspended 50 meters (about 164 feet) above the ground, the 160-meter-long (525-foot) hanging bridge takes you through the treetops, providing a thrilling and immersive perspective of the lush, biodiverse Nyungwe Forest.

Tour Highlights:

  • A Bird’s-Eye View: The walkway gives you unparalleled access to the forest canopy, where you can observe unique wildlife and plants that thrive at this elevated level. The dense greenery stretches as far as the eye can see, with towering trees, ferns, and vines creating a vibrant ecosystem.

  • Wildlife Viewing: From the canopy, you’ll have a chance to spot a variety of primates, including blue monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and sometimes even chimpanzees. Bird enthusiasts will be thrilled with the chance to see some of Nyungwe’s 300+ bird species, such as the Great Blue Turaco and numerous Albertine Rift endemics that are rarely seen from the ground.

  • Breathtaking Scenery: The walkway offers spectacular panoramic views of the forest, hills, and valleys below. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with the sound of birds and the rustling of leaves, creates a peaceful and awe-inspiring experience. On clear days, you can even see the distant mountains that form the backdrop of this vast ecosystem.

  • Adrenaline-Pumping Adventure: The canopy walk is an exciting adventure for thrill-seekers. Walking across the suspension bridge, with nothing but the forest floor far below, provides a rush of adrenaline. Despite the height, the walkway is sturdy and safe, with handrails to hold onto as you take in the breathtaking surroundings.

  • Learning Experience: Guided by expert park rangers, the tour not only focuses on the views but also gives you insight into the unique flora and fauna of the rainforest. Learn about the delicate balance of this ecosystem, its endemic species, and ongoing conservation efforts in the region.
